“Helping Pet owners of Mersea Island and surroundings to maintain the well being of their beloved family pet, through provision of veterinary care and education on responsible ownership.”
In the days of James Herriot, the community vet practice was very much the place that you took your pet to when they were sick or injured. However, in the same way that there is so much more knowledge around keeping people healthy, the same can be said for our pets.
Blackwater Vets is keen to communicate that our focus is on overall pet wellbeing and supporting you in keeping your pets healthy. Whilst we are available to treat and support pets that are injured or unwell, ultimately the objective is to try and ensure pets stay happy and healthy.
The practice offers Nurse Clinics with Registered Veterinary Nurse Rachael Nind who describes the care and advice she offers as a framework for supporting clients with preventative health care elements. It’s very much about putting a focus on how to keep pets healthy.
Rachael explains; “The idea is that I can work together with clients to come up with care plans for individual elements of pet care which then hopefully means that any vet visits may be prevented or prolonged (depending on the health concern) An example of this is where I advise clients on dental care and show them how to brush their dog’s teeth which prevents the need for dental surgery in later years.
This is very much about changing perceptions; with the right advice and support, pet wellbeing will be improved and health problems are less likely to occur. However, Nurse Clinics are also a great tool for highlighting problems to clients that may need investigating. As a qualified and Registered Veterinary Nurse, I can advise when a vet consultation is necessary and the benefits of this are that earlier diagnosis and treatment usually result in a better outcome for the pet.”
Especially at a time when people are concerned about finances, it can be difficult to explain the value of these services but the old adage of only taking a pet to the vet when it’s “needed” has changed. We now know there is so much that can be done to improve pets physical and emotional wellbeing through early intervention and education and that this often has positive financial implications too.
As Rachael explains; “I have a big interest in changing perceptions and challenging current ways of thinking to benefit pets.”
Blackwater Vets currently offers Nurse Clinics on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and consultations are £25. The practice can offer a wealth of advice and support on areas such as diet, exercise, weight management, environmental enrichment, housing, pain management, dental care, behavioural support and so much more.
The practice welcomes clients to join their ethos of being committed to pet physical and emotional wellbeing through our ongoing commitment to growing our knowledge and educating our client community.
